Who is this boat for?
Duffy Electric Boat Company was founded in 1970 and pursued the residential waterfront markets for electric boating. It has become highly successful in areas which are speed controlled (no wake zones, 5-6 knot speed for all boats) or where NO GAS POWER boating is allowed. We have found a tremendous number of boaters and nonboaters who are seeking a quiet alternative to messy and loud outboards. Additionally, they are drawn to the ease of operation and the minimal maintenance required. The social and well-designed interiors, with classic lines, have proven to attract a wide range of customers around the world.
How long will a Duffy cruise?
"Cruise" is the speed at which one glides effortlessly along. Taking in the sights and sounds of your peaceful waterway, at say 2 or 3 mph. At this rate the boat will travel for 25 miles or approximately 7 to 10 hours with a single fully charged battery pack. It is possible to double the miles by adding another battery pack.*
Range at the highest speed, with the batteries fully charged, will depend on how many passengers, the wind, the current, hull bottom and prop condition, and finally the age of the batteries. Conservatively, you could safely assume a range of approximately 15 miles, with the single battery pack or 30 miles with the double pack.*
How long does it take to recharge my Duffy?
Overnight. The standard battery pack can be recharged in 12 hours on average. Standard 110 AC household current is all that is required for the onboard “Smart Charging” system. Most docks are equipped with this type of circuit. A simple and convenient overnight charge readies the boat for full operation day after day. Charging is completely automatic, and simply requires plugging the cord into our twist-lock inlet located inside the boat. There is no need to turn the battery charger off. Once the batteries are fully charged, the “Smart Charger” will shut itself off automatically.
How much does it cost to charge my Duffy?
Based on average kWh rate of $.12, we have calculated an average cost of less than $1.00 to recharge your Duffy. We have simply calculated the total watt-hours of our battery pack, and then converted them to kilowatt-hours. Essentially, the measurement of energy to replace in the batteries. Very inexpensive when compared to the cost of gasoline or diesel.
What is the lifetime of the battery pack?
With proper care, a Duffy battery pack can provide 5 to 7 years of clean, reliable service before replacing. Proper care means maintaining water levels in the battery cells and always plugging in the shorepower to start the onboard “Smart Charging” system when you return to your dock. We also recommend monitoring battery water levels every 4 weeks during the boating season.
What do I have to know to operate a Duffy?
Duffy boats are by far the simplest to operate on the market today! No different than operating a golf cart. To prove the point, Duffy maintains three unique rental fleets in California, with over 40 Duffy boats in operation year round. The public is welcome, and within minutes of introduction to the boats, they are enjoying a private cruise. Women boaters have loved Duffy’s over the years because of their ease in handling and maneuvering.
How does a Duffy handle saltwater, wind and current?
Duffy’s were originally designed, tested and marketed on the Pacific Ocean and we are constantly faced with these elements. All of our components are selected to withstand this harsh marine environment. All Duffy’s are powered with the highest rated 48-volt “Power Plus” electric motors as standard equipment. This allows them to handle most wind and current conditions impeccably. Every precaution is taken to isolate our electric systems from moisture, which gives our customers low maintenance and years of trouble free boating.
How does Duffy power compare to trolling motor power?
Duffy drive systems are designed to be the primary power system for the boat, developing up to 220 lbs. of static thrust. The Duffy 21 Old Bay weighs about 4,000 lbs. with 10 adults aboard and can still maintain a top speed of 6.5 knots into wind and current. The Advanced DC Motor develops tremendous torque and is equivalent to about a 10-hp gas motor.
What kind of warranty is provided with my Duffy?
Duffy is the only electric boat builder to warranty its motors, controllers (the brains of our system) and propellers for LIFE! The Trojan deep cycle marine batteries are warranted for three years. All other original equipment is covered for one year. The lifetime warranty is for the orginal owner only and is non-transferrable.
Can I custom order my Duffy?
Of course! You are the customer and Duffy Electric Boats is committed to providing the boat you desire. We offer the widest range of solid hull colors, optional features, material upgrades and power systems of any electric boat builder, so you can personalize your Duffy.
